Birth Matters Virginia held its 7th Annual Awards
Gathering Sunday, August 10 in Richmond. Our guest
speaker was Cara Muhlhahn, CNM, midwife from the documentary, The
Business of Being Born. Cara's number of births per month have
doubled since the release of the film. She shared with us some personal
stories to emphasize the difference between the midwives model of care
and the obstetrical model. Brynne Potter, one of our awardees, updated
us on the political climate of birth in Virginia and emphasized the importance
of continuing our work educating families about evidence-based childbirth.
Therese Hak-Kuhn, our other awardee, reminded us about the importance
of nurturing one woman at a time. We were honored to have three midwives
share their unique approaches to improving the culture of childbirth in our
country - Cara has become nationally famous following her appearance in Ricky Lake's documentary; Brynne is working to ensure that midwifery and homebirth remain a legal birthing option in Virginia; and Therese focuses on one woman and one baby at a time. Thank you Cara, Brynne and Therese.
